Police Visit!

Today, Year 1 were lucky enough to have another special visit from some special community helpers! Three police officers from Holroyd Local Area Command came to St. Anthony's this morning to teach the children about safety and to answer some tough questions about police from the past and present.

Senior Constable Lyndal discussed the different types of police and safety with the children. They learned all about Water Police, Police Rescue, detectives and many more other types of police. We also learned about good strangers like police officers, firemen, doctors and shop keepers as well as bad strangers who we tell...

"No!"
"Stop!"
"Go Away!"

After this, Police Officer Dave showed us what was on his belt. These included handcuffs, capsicum spray, a baton and he pointed to his gun (which stayed safely in the holster on his belt!). It was really interesting seeing all of these things!

The last lucky treat we enjoyed was getting to sit in the police car and speaking into the microphone. We even got to hear the 2 different sirens that police car have!

What a fun, exciting and learning-filled morning we had with the police!

Fire Fighter Visit

Today, firefighters from Seven Hills Fire Station came to visit Year 1. We met Fireman Phil, Fireman Doug, Fireman Cam and Frie fighter Britt. The purpose of their visit was to teach Year 1 about their role and the clothing, equipment and vehicles that they use when doing their job. We are going to compare what we saw today to the photos of fire fighters from the past.

As you can see from the photos, Year One had a FANTASTIC day! We had a rocky start with the fire fighters being called out to a job twice! But when they returned for a third time, they were able to stay for over an hour and let Year One look in the truck, try on their jackets, use the radio and even spray the hose! They were wonderful with the children!

Since we took so many photos, I have only posted a few here. The others can be viewed in the slideshow on our blog.

Fire Safety Homework

Hi!

Year 1 are lucky enough to have some Firefighters from Seven Hills Fire Station coming to visit us tomorrow. They will be giving us some information about fire safety and how firefighting has changed from the past to the present. The students might even get a chance to look at a fire engine and all of its equipment! Very exciting!

So today your child is bringing home some fire safety homework that needs to be completed tonight in preparation for tomorrow. We had a lesson today where we discussed fire safety and what to do in situations where there is smoke in a room or clothes catching on fire. We ask that your child completes this homework tonight and returns it to school tomorrow.

If you need the worksheet you can access it by clicking on the link below.

GOLD AND FOLD MUFTI DAY TOMORROW!

Hi Parents!

Just a reminder that tomorrow, Friday 26th February, will be the St Anthony’s World Youth Day “Gold & Fold” Mufti Day with ALL proceeds going to build a learning centre in the Philippines. ALL children are asked to wear something GOLD or yellow instead of their normal school uniform and donate either a GOLD coin or a ‘Folding’ note. Come on and give this gift of education to those who have suffered.

Games from the Past!

Today, Year 1 had the opportunity to play games that were popular in the past (and some that are still popular today) with the help of Year 6 students. The games included Hookey, Quoits, Marbles, Elastics and Pick Up Sticks.

The students seemed to enjoy their time playing with these games from the past and found it very hard to believe that iPads, computers, Playstations and Wii's haven't existed forever! They also seemed very amazed to think that their grandparents used to make their own toys and games. My own grandfather used to play cricket using sticks/bark as a bat and a rock as a ball!

We hope the children enjoyed their time playing these games from the past and hopefully you can talk to them about it tonight! You might like to tell them about the games that you used to play.
