Fire Safety Homework

Hi!

Year 1 are lucky enough to have some Firefighters from Seven Hills Fire Station coming to visit us tomorrow. They will be giving us some information about fire safety and how firefighting has changed from the past to the present. The students might even get a chance to look at a fire engine and all of its equipment! Very exciting!

So today your child is bringing home some fire safety homework that needs to be completed tonight in preparation for tomorrow. We had a lesson today where we discussed fire safety and what to do in situations where there is smoke in a room or clothes catching on fire. We ask that your child completes this homework tonight and returns it to school tomorrow.

If you need the worksheet you can access it by clicking on the link below.

GOLD AND FOLD MUFTI DAY TOMORROW!

Hi Parents!

Just a reminder that tomorrow, Friday 26th February, will be the St Anthony’s World Youth Day “Gold & Fold” Mufti Day with ALL proceeds going to build a learning centre in the Philippines. ALL children are asked to wear something GOLD or yellow instead of their normal school uniform and donate either a GOLD coin or a ‘Folding’ note. Come on and give this gift of education to those who have suffered.

Games from the Past!

Today, Year 1 had the opportunity to play games that were popular in the past (and some that are still popular today) with the help of Year 6 students. The games included Hookey, Quoits, Marbles, Elastics and Pick Up Sticks.

The students seemed to enjoy their time playing with these games from the past and found it very hard to believe that iPads, computers, Playstations and Wii's haven't existed forever! They also seemed very amazed to think that their grandparents used to make their own toys and games. My own grandfather used to play cricket using sticks/bark as a bat and a rock as a ball!

We hope the children enjoyed their time playing these games from the past and hopefully you can talk to them about it tonight! You might like to tell them about the games that you used to play.

Olden School Day

Today Year 1 was transformed into a classroom from the past. The desks were in rows, the children's work was removed from the walls and replaced by large posters of a cursive alphabet, God Save the Queen, School rules from the 1900s and Glory Be. The children only had one led pencil and their worksheets to use throughout the day. The teachers were dressed in old fashioned clothing and gave lessons that would have been taught in the past. The lessons included reciting and copying "God Save the Queen", practicing cursive handwriting, a spelling test, marching around the basketball court, completing addition and subtraction sums and praying the Glory Be.

The students had mixed feelings about the olden school day experience. Some quite enjoyed the silence whilst others were very shocked to see what school was like in the past. They were all quite happy once the teachers were back in their normal clothes and the classroom was back to normal! They are very appreciative of all the resources available to them in present day classrooms.

Have a look at the photos from our experiences today!

The children had to take their distance before practising marching in straight lines around the playground.

Students came up to the blackboard to share their answers.

The students didn't have any materials to help them solve the problems. They had to either work out the sums in their heads or use their fingers.

Rainbow Serpent

1W have been playing the Rainbow Serpent game for Maths Warm Up this week. We started with 1-digit numbers but have now progressed to 2-digit numbers.

The students noticed that we need to think about how many tens the number has to help us to order the numbers and think of where they should go on the serpent.

Today the students even wrote the number that is 10 more and 10 less than their numbers. They noticed that the number in the 10s place is the only number that changes each time.
